How to Get Your Music Played on BBC 1Xtra | TAP
1Xtra Xtra Talent and emerging artist features
By TAP Editorial Team
Quick answer
BBC Radio 1Xtra is its own national station, not a Radio 1 show, and the open route for a new artist is BBC Introducing rather than any application scheme. Upload at bbc.co.uk/introducing/uploader, find the one specialist show your record fits, and send a short email to a named person four to six weeks before release with a broadcast-quality master and a working link.
BBC Radio 1Xtra is its own national station, not a Radio 1 show. It has been on air since 16 August 2002 with its own schedule, its own presenters and its own music team, and it plays Black music across rap, R&B, drill, Afrobeats, dancehall and the UK sounds that sit between them. If you are putting out a record yourself, this checklist covers what you need in place before you contact anyone there, where a new artist is actually listened to, and what happens if the answer is yes.

There is no scheme to be accepted into and no form that decides this. There is a station with a schedule, people who make each show, and a record that either fits an hour of it or does not. Get the mix right, upload to BBC Introducing, find the one show your record belongs in, and send something short to a named person four to six weeks out. Then keep the rest of your release moving while you wait.
Pro tips
1. The single biggest lift is sending to a named person rather than a general studio address. In our own campaign data a named contact replies about five times as often. Finding one name takes ten minutes and changes the odds more than anything you can write in the email.
2. Introducing is not the consolation prize. It is the route the BBC built for exactly your position, it feeds the national stations, and a record that has already had a local Introducing play arrives at 1Xtra with something behind it.
3. Match the record to the hour rather than the station. 1Xtra's specialist shows each hold a different sound, and a dancehall record sent to the wrong evening reads as though you have never listened. One correct show beats six hopeful ones.
4. Write the email so it can be read on a phone in ten seconds. Release date, one line on what it is, one link, your name. Everything you were going to add underneath is the reason it does not get read.
5. If you have paid for radio promotion before, you already know the useful part was the relationships and the follow-through, not the mailout. You can do the follow-through yourself. It is mostly a matter of keeping a list and being reachable.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1Xtra a Radio 1 show?
No. BBC Radio 1Xtra is a separate national station with its own schedule, presenters and music team. It launched on 16 August 2002 and is described by the BBC as a sister station to Radio 1, which is where the confusion comes from. They share some events and occasionally simulcast a programme, but a play on one is not a play on the other and they are pitched separately.
What happened to Xtra Talent?
Xtra Talent was a 1Xtra residency series that handed new DJs and presenters their own show for a short run, and the references to it cluster between roughly 2007 and 2014. It was a presenter platform rather than a way to submit music, and there is no open call under that name on the station now. If you are sending a record, BBC Introducing and the specialist shows are the live routes.
Do I need a plugger to get played on 1Xtra?
No. Plenty of records reach the station through BBC Introducing and through specialist shows that take music directly. What you are paying for when you hire someone is their time, their existing relationships and the discipline of following up, and those are things you can supply yourself for one release if you are organised about it.
How long should I wait before following up?
Seven days, once, in the same email thread. Add something new if you have it, such as a play somewhere else or a confirmed date. If that gets no response, treat it as a no and put your energy into the next record rather than into a third email. Producers remember who was easy to deal with.
How will I know if the record got played?
Often nobody tells you. Stations add records without replying, which is why so many artists assume a campaign did nothing when it did. Check the station's recently played listing, watch for the usual signs in the two days after a suspected play, and use any airplay monitoring you have access to. Do not read silence as a rejection.

Proof points
- Named contact reply rate vs studio@: 5x higher (Liberty Music PR campaign data, 2024-2026)
- Best UK send window: Tue/Wed 09:00-10:00 UK (Across 60+ campaigns)
- Optimal follow-up cadence: +7 days from initial pitch (Liberty internal data)
- Reply visibility blind spot: Stations add to rotation without replying (WARM monitoring vs email reply rate)
What actually happened
Roam Belle: 96 plays across UK regional and community stations. Named-contact approach, declining curve in week 5. (Spring 2025)
1Xtra is daytime-driven and specialist-led at night. The names matter more than the station. I pitch the specialist team first, lead with a clean wav and a tight bio, and follow the specialist-to-daytime handover when it comes. UK rap and grime on 1Xtra responds to direct, unfussy emails. The verbose press release is read by no one.
