How to Set Up a MusoSoup Campaign: Checklist | TAP

MusoSoup campaign setup checklist

By TAP Editorial Team

Quick answer

Set a MusoSoup campaign up in this order. Get the release date and the streaming links settled first, since a playlist curator cannot add a track that is not out yet. Upload the best-quality audio the platform accepts, tag one honest primary genre with two or three moods, write under a hundred and fifty words about the sound rather than about yourself, and run the campaign for three to four weeks.

On MusoSoup the curators come to you, so everything that decides whether your campaign works is set before you press launch. The tags decide who sees it, the description decides who opens it, the audio decides who says yes, and none of the three can be fixed convincingly once the campaign is live. Work through this in order and the campaign starts in front of the right people instead of the wrong ones.

MusoSoup rewards preparation more than budget. Accurate tags, a description written for a curator rather than a fan, a properly mastered file and links that work will carry a campaign further than paying for more visibility on a page nobody wants to open. Get the setup right and the platform does what it is good at, which is putting your record in front of independent curators actively looking for something new.

Pro tips

1. Curator numbers vary enormously by genre. Lo-fi and ambient have hundreds of active curators, while a narrow guitar or club genre might have a dozen. Check before you commit a budget, because the strategy for twelve curators is nothing like the strategy for three hundred.

2. Mood is the precision tool and genre is the blunt one. Cinematic plus upbeat plus introspective narrows the pool to curators building a specific kind of list, which is exactly who you want reading your description.

3. The curators here are independent playlist builders and bloggers, not editorial teams at the streaming services. Their lists run from a hundred followers to six figures, and the mid-sized ones with engaged listeners are usually worth more to you than the biggest.

4. Exclusivity quietly kills campaigns. If a blog or a premiere partner has an exclusive window, put it in the description rather than leaving curators to discover it, and expect the coverage to arrive after the window rather than during it.

5. A higher visibility level does not rescue weak positioning. Test at the standard level with careful tags, learn who responds, and pay for reach once you know which curators you are trying to reach more of.

Frequently asked questions

Should I run the same track at several visibility levels at once?

No. Run one at a time so you can tell what the level actually changed. Once you know which curators respond to your music, you can decide whether more reach is worth paying for. Running everything at once spends the budget and leaves you unable to say which part of it worked.

How do I know whether my tagging is too narrow or too broad?

Look after the first week. No curator interest at all usually means the tags are too narrow or simply wrong. Interest from curators whose lists sound nothing like your record means they are too broad. Either way the fix is a fresh campaign with one thing changed, not a slow edit to the live one.

Can I edit the description or tags after launching?

Assume not. Even where an edit is technically possible, the curators who have already scrolled past will not come back for the improved version. Everything that matters is decided at submission, which is why the final read-through before you press launch is the most valuable ten minutes of the whole campaign.

What if a curator asks for an exclusive?

Check what you have already promised before you agree. If a blog holds a premiere window or your distributor has committed you elsewhere, say so plainly and offer a date after it closes. Curators are used to windows and respect being told; they do not forget finding out afterwards.

How long before I decide a campaign has not worked?

Two weeks. Curator activity is front-loaded, so most of the interest you are going to get arrives in the first ten to fourteen days and late responses are rare. If it is quiet at the two-week mark, change the tagging or the description and launch a new campaign rather than waiting for the timer to run out.

From the field

Proof points

  • Named contact reply rate vs studio@: 5x higher (Liberty Music PR campaign data, 2024-2026)
  • Best UK send window: Tue/Wed 09:00-10:00 UK (Across 60+ campaigns)
  • Specialist shows beat playlist pitches: Named producers respond, playlist-only emails get dropped (Liberty 2024-2026)
  • Genre-fit miss rate: ~30% of pitches hit outlets misaligned with the actual sound (Self-audit of 2024 sends)

What actually happened

Eyes Glued, BBC Radio 6 Music: 153 plays across 6 weeks, accelerating in week 4. Track-led pitch with a single playable line. (March 2025)

Musosoup is a paid submission platform, useful for blog and playlist coverage at small scale. I treat it as a top-up channel, not a primary one. The reply rates are decent for the price but the coverage is rarely the kind that compounds. Named contacts in direct outreach still outperform Musosoup placements per pound spent. I run both in parallel for the smaller campaigns and rely on direct outreach for the larger ones.
